Guten Tag! Wilkommen to U3A's German for beginners page! We are delighted to help you on your German learning journey!
We are a fun learning group that will help you to communicate in your travels to German-speaking countries. By attending this group over time, you should be able to meet German speaking people and introduce yourself, order in restaurants, purchase tickets and engage in simple conversations . We hope to progress from there to understanding more about grammar and culture in those countries where German is used.
German is not the easiest foreign language to learn so this is for persons with a need to learn the basics in a U3A cooperative and self help environment. If you are a beginner, you need to think of this as a multi-year commitment. Studying German with this group just for a few weeks probably won't take you very far.
Our meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month (this may change during Christmas, Easter and summertime. We meet at 10am in the Falcon Room at the Stourbridge Institute (entrance on Bell St. opposite the Crystal Leisure Centre).
As of October 2025, the group has been running for over a year and various members have joined during the year. We have decided to return to the beginning of our study materials to make sure that members are learning the basics. So, this is an excellent time for newcomers to join us.
We are using the BBC box set "Talk German Complete" by Judith Matthews and Jeanne Wood ISBN 978-1-406-67892-5 (available on Amazon) and this costs approximately £20. Please let us know of your interest by clicking on the Contact link on this page and someone will be in touch.
